Question: What type of business license(s) do i need to provide a snake removal service in California?
I have checked with the department of Fish and game and am all clear with them. What type of business permit(s) do I need? I will be based out of my home (no office space) but will not be bringing my work home with me! Will I need to get a P.O. box in order to have a physical mailing address for the “business”? I will be providing the service in multiple counties and cities but will be based in one city, in one county. Do I need a license from every city and county that I may potentially be doing business in or just where the business is based. Again, this is regarding a snake removal service for several counties and numerous cities within those counties. I am not selling products or building anything…simply removing venomous snakes from people’s properties for a suggested fee/donation. Thanks!

You should contact your state, county, and city of your home base, and ask each level of government what licenses or permits you’ll need for your location, type of business, and entity type. There are corporate lawyers who can help you make these determinations, or third-party services that can determine and obtain all of your required licenses and permits for you.

As far as your neighboring counties, you’ll need to determine what constitutes “doing business” in those counties — they may require you to register your business in their counties as well, which will require additional licenses and permits.

Good luck!

Question: I need a good community based kids program for my kids to join or help start up. Do you know a good one?
I’m looking to start something for my kids, mainly after school, something a home schooler parents would like so that other families could join them. (I’m not a home schooler parent). I would like them to have hands on experiences in being able to develope small skills to build character and confidence and to be able to help themseves and others. At home skills, tools, car care, any thing related to or around the home including cooking and sewing. Looking for projects but nothing in the way of sports; excepting hiking and camping. Any thing out doors would be great. Also day trips to business “friendly” local business locations, including farms and ranches. I’m a retired teacher and counselor. I live 30-40 miles south of Fort Worth, TX.

Music! American Piano Schools proved it and offers advice and service, trips and events also work well, like a Friday After School Club. You can hire a music teacher to come in and give group lessons.

Question: I need information on starting a custom scrapbook business in Pennsylvania?
I am looking to start a home-based custom scrapbook business in Pennsylvania. I have done basic research and it appears that I will need a Tax ID number and to register my “business” with a ficticious name with the Department of State.

I’m overwhelmed with the amount of information…tax considerations, collecting sales tax, registering ficticious names, etc…Is there someone out there in Pennsylvania that can help me out to make my business legitimate (I don’t want to do anything incorrectly).

I will be the only person working for my “business”…how will I go about paying my Social Security taxes, etc.

Thanks!

I actually live in PA so I might be able to help some… but before I do so… a disclaimer:

I’m neither a lawyer, nor an accountant and therefore am not qualified to give you official legal, financial nor tax recommendations. I’ll just tell you what I’ve seen in my experience.

First off: the two professions listed above would be good to talk to as there are legal repercussions to doing things wrong. But to minimize the time spent with the above on basic definitions you could learn on your own, you might check out a book on starting a business in PA (I’ve seen them in Barnes and Noble, and online at Amazon).

One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is the structure decision based on your risk tolerance and ease/cost of set up flexibility.
*Sole Proprietorship – you are your business – high risk (you are personally liable for all of your businesses debt/risks/injuries/etc.) But very little overhead costs
*Partnership – you and a partner are your business (pretty much the same as above, except divided by the number of partners
*Limited Partnership – two classes of partners: General partners are just like partners in a partnership. Limited partners, however, just provide money and own a portion of the company but do not control the operations of the company. Limited partners are not personally liable for the businesses debt/risks/etc. This takes more work to set up though.
*S-Corporation – Very few reasons why you’d choose this over an LLC so I’m not going to explain it.
*LLC – now we’re looking more like corporations, which means guidelines, documentation, debt/risk/etc is borne by the company, etc. However, with a LLC the income of the company is still pass-through for income purposes, so the income goes straight onto the owners’ tax forms
*C-Corporation – This is what the big guys are, the company is now it’s own legal entity and is completely separable from its owners for income, tax, and liability purposes. Pretty expensive to set up.

Depending on what you choose for the above will change what you have to do to legally set up the entity (from sole proprietor being easiest, to C-Corp or LLC being hardest).

For taxes.
*You may have to pay a self-employment tax
*You will have to collect sales tax from customers and submit it to the gov’t
*Your tax filings every year will get a lot more complicated (if you didn’t use an accountant before, you will now… TaxCut and the like won’t cut it for you)
*You will have additional taxes that you didn’t see before as an employee of another company and will have to make periodic estimated payments.

Long story short…..there is a lot to keep in mind for this. Small business owners generally get to know their accountant very very well and even use them as an adviser/consultant since they will know your business so well. Being self-employed isn’t for the weak of heart or for someone who thinks it will be easy. You will probably work harder self-employed than you did as an employee.

You didn’t ask, but something I always suggest is to put together a business plan before doing anything else. Make sure that the numbers work out and that there’s a big enough market that you can grow in good times and at least survive in hard times. (and be honest, if you’re too optimistic in your numbers, you’re only fooling yourself)

A colleague of mine actually opened a scrapbooking store in Tucson for a while and said that the scrapbooking community was very welcoming and helped him get started… might see if the PA community will help you out with advise.

But I digress, there are many books and websites out there that will help you put together your thoughts into a business plan. I’m leaving you some particularly helpful/reputable sites in the source list.

Best of luck with the new business

Question: Do I need a business license?
I will be operating a home-based “business” in Fulton County, Georgia. Basically I’ll just be doing some data entry and monitoring the delivery of merchandise. I am only going to be working for ONE company — they are in Europe and just need someone in the US to oversee the delivery of their products to their customers in the US. I can’t find any relevant info online… Do I even need a license to be independently contracting my services??
BTW, I KNOW this isn’t a scam…I live in Europe now and do the same thing for this company right now for their clients here. But I’m moving back to the US next month. I’ll just do the same thing for their clients here. AND, it’s handmade FURNITURE, not drugs.

Question: I need to report my employer for calling me an independent contractor and not taking taxes out for me.?
When she hired me she took advantage of the fact that I knew nothing about “self employment”, so when she told me that I would be working for her real estate office as an administrative assistant/secretary and working 40 hours a week, for $ 8 dollars an hour, but I would need to do my own taxes, I was apprehensive but needed a job quick. I have come to find out that she is taking advantage of me. I am having to take out a substantial portion of income to keep up with the self employment taxes. She told me that I am an independent contractor and do whatever she says, and once in a blue moon she will have run an errand locally, but 99% of the time, I sit behind a desk and take orders from her all day. I am even admonished if I am 2 minutes late. She said that all her agents, including herself, are independent contractors and self employed, but they get commission and such. I work the same hours-mon-fri. How do I go about reporting her? Am I right do do this? I want to find another job…
I am a teacher and looking for teaching work, but won’t find that (hopefully) until August. In the meantime, I am trying to find another low paying secretarial job to keep myself afloat. I am constantly being disrespected at work and treated like a second class citizen. It’s adding insult to injury. Had I not learned that what she was doing was wrong from wonderful yahoo answer users, I would have carried on being taken advantage of. I would rather take the risk of reporting her, consequences given to her, and I lose my job, than to sit here and do nothing about it. It’s not right.
Also, why would she feel such a need to not take taxes out on me? How does she benefit from this? Am I am a tax-write off for her? What would make her so adamant abotu NOT taking taxes out of rme? I am must trying to understand what could compell her to do something like this?
Am I justified in feeling like I do, or she is on the up and up?
